Cape York

Iron, (IIIAB) Medium octahedrite. Cape York was found in 1818, in Western Greenland. It was known long before that by the local Inuit tribes who had used the large masses of iron they found in the area for making tools. Three huge masses were known, called the "Tent" (Ahnighito), "The Woman", and "The Dog". Admiral Peary took the huge meteorite (Which almost sank his ship!) and transported them to New York City in 1898. This piece is cut from the Agpalilik mass, 15 tons, which is in Copenhagen, Denmark. Cape York is very difficult to acquire as almost all is locked in museums, and it is very hard to cut.

This is a stamp issued by Greenland in 1978 to commemorate the discovery of the Cape York meteorite.

Every piece sold here includes one of the stamps.
